Fatman needed to lose weight, went for 'a bit of a walk'

BY now, Brendon Alsop should be past Mount Larcom on his trip to Cairns.

Not bad considering he's on foot and started out in Geelong.

Alsop and his dog Jojo have been an unusual sight on the streets on Gladstone this week as he continued his journey to raise money for cancer research and lose weight on the Fatman's Great Aussie Trek.

"I started off at 145 kilos and decided that I needed to do something radical to get the weight off, so I thought I'd go for a bit of a walk," Alsop said.

Alsop has walked more than 2600km since he starting out in February for Cairns, a lazy 3800km away from his home town.

He says the best part of the journey so far has been meeting new people.

"Australians are just great people," he said. "I find that if you meet them with a genuine cause, they'll give you the shirt off their back."

Along with losing weight, he aims to raise money for cancer research in honour of friends and family past. Go to mycause.com.au/page/55891.
