A FATHER has been praised for saving his son's life after pulling the boy from fast-flowing water west of Mackay on Friday.

The eight-year-old, from Andergrove, was playing in a creek when he was sucked into a causeway and became trapped.

The incident occurred around noon when the boy was visiting friends at Turrawalla station, about 90km from Mackay.

As the alert was raised paramedics were despatched as was the RACQ CQ Rescue helicopter.

Upon arrival the RACQ CQ Rescue medical team applied a neck brace and administered advanced pain relief.

Paramedics then placed the boy on a vacuum mattress for transportation to hospital.

His mother accompanied him on the flight which arrived at Mackay Base Hospital just after 3pm.

Upon arrival x-rays and further assessments were carried out. His condition was stable.

A spokesman from RACQ CQ Rescue said the boy's father's quick action in pulling him out almost certainly saved his life.

"The boy had sustained cuts and abrasions to his abdomen and back and arms," the spokesman said.

Late on Friday the boy was in a stable condition and expected to spend the night under observation in the children's ward.
