Mum, Olympian wants her voice heard
DUAL Olympian Deborah Acason is without doubt an inspiration to all young mothers.
Ms Acason, who represented Australia at the 2004 and 2008 Olympics in weightlifting, is juggling a state political campaign with the Family First Party in Bundamba while also training for the London Olympics. On top of that, the 2006 Commonwealth Games gold medallist has six-month-old daughter Eva to look after.
The family values that the party stands for were a big drawcard for Ms Acason.
"Becoming a mum I have realised that life is short and you've got to have your voice heard. One of the big things for me is to make Australia one of the best places on earth to have a family," she said.
Training for the 2012 London Olympics is "on track".
"My parents have been very supportive because I do most of my training at their house.
"They have been enjoying seeing the granddaughter. My husband has also been coming to the gym for a couple of hours to look after her while I train at Chandler. Some days are a bit more of a struggle than others, but that is typical of family life."
Ms Acason started off doing two hours a week, but has stepped that up to four or five weekly sessions of an hour and a half each.
This weekend she will compete in the national club championships in Melbourne with the Olympic selection trials on June 16 at Chandler.
"This is the first time we have had an Olympic selection trial in Brisbane. It is exciting that I can have my fan club up here with me," she said.
Whatever happens in the election, she was a mum who wanted to have her voice heard.
