Townsville prison escapees plead guilty to breaking out

TWO prison escapees pleaded guilty to charges against them when they appeared by video in Gympie Magistrates Court yesterday.

Jacob Ben Allen and Claude William Cobbo are due to appear in the court again on February 16.

They face charges of escaping from lawful custody at a Townsville correctional facility on December 30.

They also each face five charges from New Year's Eve as they allegedly fled south passing through Calliope, Benaraby and Miriam Vale.

Those charges involve evading cab fare in Townsville, unlawfully using a motor vehicle and three counts each of failing to stop when required by police.

Police have previously told the court the men also failed to pay a fare allegedly owed to Townsville Taxi service after they travelled by cab from the escape scene.

They are accused of unlawfully using a Kia Cerato, with logo "Hound Dog Hairdressing" without permissions from its owner, Dorothy Dehaan, and with three incidents of failing to stop for police when required.

They were arrested near Gympie.

The incidents happened firstly at Marlborough, north of Rockhampton, then at Bundaberg West and later at Doolbi, near Childers.

It was Allen and Cobbo's third court appearance, having initially been brought before a holiday sitting of Caboolture Magistrates Court on New Year's Day.

There they were remanded to appear in the Gympie court on January 4.

After yesterday, their next appearance is expected to involving sentencing.

A third co-accused, Craig Jackson, is also in custody.

His case will come back before the Gympie court on February 1.

That will be his third court appearance on matters related to the alleged escape.
