WOMEN should forget about trying to achieve a 'thigh gap' and be happy with a body shape achievable through regular exercise and healthy eating.
That's according to CQUniversity Exercise and Sports Sciences academic Peter Reaburn, who says physical attributes are greatly determined by DNA.
Associate Professor Reaburn was commenting on international model Robyn Lawley's recent warning about a trend leading some women to become obsessed with striving for a visible gap between their thighs.
"Our society, and in particular magazines aimed at women and teenage girls, seems to be obsessed with physical appearance and what is physical perfection," Assoc Prof Reaburn said.
"It's no wonder young and middle-aged women are going to great lengths to achieve what they believe is the ideal body.
"However, while you can choose your lifestyle, you can't choose your parents.
"Your genes are primarily responsible for your bone structure, your frame size, the parts of your body where you will tend to store extra fat, and your metabolic rate.
"These physical attributes are greatly determined by your DNA," Assoc Prof Reaburn said.
"So forget about the thigh gap as the goal, eat well, exercise regularly, and be happy with your own healthy body that mum and dad gave you."
