UPDATE:

IS IT A CROC, log or palm frond? VMR skipper Hamish McLeod doesn't put much faith in the recent crocodile sighting on the Boyne River.

Mr McLeod said he had lived on or near the Boyne River for the last 20 years and never sighted a crocodile.

"I'm a bit of a sceptic but to my knowledge there hasn't ever been a credible sighting," he said.

"I've heard from a couple of fairly reliable people who said they've seen them but there's never been a photo."

The Department of Environment and Heritage Protection has not recorded the sighting.

Mr McLeod thought crocodile sightings on the Boyne River was a case of mistaken identity.

"I think some people might see floating palm fronds and from a distance with an inexperienced eye think 'there's a crocodile'," he said.

Views on social media were mixed with many readers throwing cold water on the sighting.

Mick Wongung Maies wrote on Facebook: "There hasn't been a croc in the boyne for years. They were shot out a long time ago but I am not saying they're not there.

Roxy Hourigan: "So glad I'm at Lake Awoonga…Stay away Mr croc.

Leanne Smith: "I witnessed a juvenile croc at the Lily's years ago. I rang the environmental department however I don't think they bothered to check for nests.

Sharlene Harrison: "Just a sighting? No photographic evidence?"

Steve Griffo: "They are everywhere up and down the coast.

EARLIER:

A CROCODILE was sighted on the banks of the Boyne River on Thursday afternoon.

The croc, possibly 12ft long, was spotted at 4.30pm lying on the river bank and did not display any aggressive behaviour.

The Council said the crocodile retreated into the water after it was approached by people in a boat.

VMR boat captain Hamish McLeod - who lives on a boat on the Boyne River - said he was not aware of any crocodile sightings.

Commenting on Facebook, Adrian N Debbie Southgate wrote: been living at Boyne since 1982 and ain't seen a croc yet, spent a lot of nights fishing and swimming in the river,it's inevitable that one will turn up because off territorial areas they claim, and with no predetar they will spread out,but until a photo surfaces ,I am unsure if they are here,YET

Rana O'regan wrote: It's looking for its mate, it has been sighted for a few years now from calliope river as far as benaraby bridge, all river ways and beaches in between its no threat just be mindful that they are here

Simon Pimm: It was near the bridge near the lillies on Sunday . We ran into 2 older blokes who saw it on the bank and it bolted into the water. Croc was underwater by the time they got their phones out but he has photos of the slide. Looks like it's for real this time. Probably moved out of the narrows with the huge tides last week

Candice Murray wrote: There has been crocodiles in the calliope river for years but they don't seem to harm anyone there has also been baby sharks swept up from King tides. we take dogs down there swim our horses down there swim in the river and haven't seen one for about a year
