Parents tasered as son's 21st gets out of control

THE parents of a man celebrating his 21st birthday were tasered and pepper sprayed after an argument over smoking turned ugly at the Reef Hotel, Gladstone Magistrates Court heard on Tuesday.

The court heard that on July 5 a member of the party became embroiled in a dispute with security guards over cigarette smoking in an eating area.

The argument escalated and eventually David Richard Salter was asked to leave, but he refused.

Police were called and attempted to arrest Mr Salter but were forced to make a "tactical retreat" after a number of patrons became aggressive towards them.

Police later returned and managed to arrest Mr Salter, who then tensed his arms and refused to move.

Leanne Mary Salter then intervened because she "thought her husband was being injured".

Mrs Salter also resisted arrest and "attempted to shake police off".

The duo pleaded guilty to assault or obstruct police officer.

Both were fined $600 with no conviction recorded and no banning order imposed.

The couple's lawyer said they were both devastated and extremely embarrassed by their actions.
