Celebration time as Oval opened
IT was a long time coming for the Miriam Vale community but it has finally unveiled the new facilities at Gary Larson Oval Multi Sports Complex.
About 800 people joined the celebrations on Saturday night.
Gary Larson Oval enhancement group president Owen Harms said there were not many people in Miriam Vale who weren't down at the opening of the new facilities.
"Just about the whole town was here," Harms said.
"People travelled, it was a great turnout."
The night certainly had everything you could ask for with the formalities of speeches culminating in the cutting of the ribbon to open the new facilities. Live entertainment kept the celebration going in to the night.
There was something for the kids as well with a bucking bull and gladiator duelling.
"The community really came together. The community spirit was so alive," Harms said.
The oval's namesake Gary Larson was also in attendance. He said he enjoyed the new facilities which included a canteen, changing rooms, a grandstand and a scoreboard.
"The facilities look absolutely magnificent," Larson said.
"It's a venue where they now can hold events, not only sport. Who knows? It is up to the imagination.
"The facilities are long overdue for the community."
The other new addition to the oval was a sign featuring Larson who was modest about his involvement.
"I'm humbled and very appreciative.
"I'm just a name to the oval. They've done the hard work," Larson said.
