Adelaide to roar with V8 power

THE V8 Supercars are set to return for the first time this year, this weekend for the 2012 Clipsal 500 Adelaide.

This will be the 14th event, hosted on Adelaide's world famous 3.2km street circuit in the city heart.

The Clipsal 500 Adelaide will play host to four days of epic rocking action which will include two 250km V8 Supercar races as well as support race categories, therefore delivering South Australia its largest annual sporting event for the year.

This feast of motorsport action is joined with on-circuit entertainment with more than 90 individual on and off-track events.

This mix of worthwhile entertainment has resulted in international icon Murray Walker describing it as "the best touring car event in the world".

On a different note, for the first time since the beginning of the V8 touring car series in 1993, the stranglehold of Holden and Ford is set to be broken with Nissan's announcement a few weeks ago that they will be the new manufacturer for next year.

This official announcement will apparently see Nissan return to the series that it dominated in the early 1990s.

However, The Car of the Future has strict rules stating that any new entry will need to make use of a naturally-designed V8.

Therefore, in order to keep the competition fair, Nissan's car will be almost identical to its Holden and Ford competitors, the only difference being the outer shell.

As to what model Nissan will enter into the series, it yet to be decided as Nissan will be entering next year's championship as part of the Car of the Future program that was created by Mark Skaife in 2010.

Nonetheless, the V8 Supercar championship will definitely benefit from the addition of another brand or two other than Holden and Ford. This will hopefully attract a massive new interest in the series, which has been relatively low in previous years.

That is why V8 Supercars Australia has seen the need to alter the requirements of the series to allow other manufacturers to join the category.

Nissan will appear in 2013 with a four-car team run by Kelly Racing, with Todd and Rick Kelly announcing their switch from Holden to Nissan, something diehard Holden supporters never would have seen coming until now.

Kelly Racing is already in the process of developing its Car of the Future for testing later this year.

The early test cars might resemble Holdens but it is understood that the deal with Holden finishes at the end of this year's season. But the team's driver line-up will remain the same.

The year ahead for V8 Supercars is set to be an incredible one, with new teams and drivers. Make sure you don't miss the first round this weekend for the Clipsal 500 Adelaide.
