VIDEO: Norman Gardens spearfisher stable after shark attack

A NORMAN Gardens father was yesterday afternoon transferred in a stable condition to a Brisbane hospital after being attacked by a shark off Miall Island on Saturday.

Allan Countryman was spearfishing when he was attacked by a shark believed to be two to three metres long.

Yeppoon Coast Guard helped Queensland Ambulance Service crews to bring Mr Countryman to shore.

Flotilla Commander Arthur Hunt said the Coast Guard was training in Keppel Bay and could get a boat to Miall Island quickly.

Coast Guard crews and people snorkelling nearby at the time of the attack gave first aid.

At Rosslyn Bay, the Coast Guard was met by Queensland Ambulance Service paramedics and the RACQ Capricorn Helicopter Rescue Service.

Crews stabilised Mr Countryman before transporting him by ambulance to Rockhampton Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Queensland Ambulance Service senior operations supervisor Brad Miers said crews planned to fly Mr Countryman, but transported him by road due to the nature of the injuries.

Mr Miers said paramedics were called to the scene at 11.30am.

He said Mr Countryman had "lost a significant amount of blood" and received "quite severe injuries to his upper arms".

He said the help of the Coast Guard and those first on scene was "fantastic".

"The assistance from the Coast Guard was invaluable," he said.

"Without their assistance ... there would have been a delay in assessing the patient and providing emergency care."

Mr Miers said shark attacks were not common off Yeppoon.

"In my career, I can't recall a shark attack off the Capricorn Coast," he said.

"It's very strange that it's occurred and a very rare event."
