BHP Billiton project to now be run out of South America

BHP Billiton's Olympic Dam project in South Australia will now be governed from an office in South America after a company reshuffle on Thursday.

The planned expansion of Olympic Dam was put on hold in August after BHP announced it would seek to find a less costly way to grow the site.

At the time, it also opted to sell its Yeelirrie uranium mine in Western Australia to Cameco.

The changes will have little impact on workers with BHP emphasising the shifting of responsibility would not take away its presence in Adelaide.

Darryl Cuzzubbo, who heads the Olympic Dam project, will remain in place but will now also be South Australian president for BHP, reporting directly to its London office on dealings with the South Australian Government.

The adjustments are to be made by March 31 next year.
