A 2-1 VICTORY was secured by Gladstone on Wednesday in a nail-biting close to the Queensland state hockey championships.

The under-15 girls stood firm on home ground as they battled their Brisbane rivals in the early afternoon.

Coach Andrew McGuire said the performance of the Gladstone players was indicative of their dedication to the game.

"The winner comes down to who wants it the most," he said. "Clearly, today, that was us."

Playing forcefully, captain Rhiannon Baxter and Mikeal Bobart both scored to establish an early lead in the game over their southern opposition at Rigby Park.

It is the third time in as many years that the girls have been victorious.

Going by their jubilant celebrations after their success on Wednesday, it seems the girls are not getting sick of that winning feeling and will be a force again at next year's championships.
