Bats stand outside Gladstone homes to honour Hughes

Michael Richards

PHILLIP Hughes was known for his unique flashing of the willow, and so it was fitting that bats sat still across the world yesterday, marking the death of the cricketer.

Fans stood cricket bats outside their homes, with cricket hats atop to pay respect the day after he died in hospital.

Gladstone was no different, with players like Matt Le Lacheur digging out his bat when he heard about the idea.

The Boyne Island Tannum Sands Cricket Club player said he thought it was a fitting tribute to someone who died doing what he loved.

In the company of other cricketers across the country, Le Lacheur said he couldn't help but be amazed by the way Hughes played the game.

"A #PutOutYourBats photo was on Facebook. Someone just posted a picture and I was looking at it," he said.

"So I just put (my cricket bat) out the back, took a photo, and left it out there for a bit."

Le Lacheur will still play in the local fixtures this weekend, but said he thought the incident would be in the minds of players.

"I think people will hold back on the bouncers," he said.
