Award for duo who saved woman
WHEN Rockhampton's Fred Hoare and Daniel Doble went to the rescue of Shirley Roberts when she was viciously attacked by two dogs, they had no thought of being hailed local heroes.
"We didn't even think about it," Fred said yesterday.
"I just grabbed a shovel and off I went."
The two were yesterday honoured with Commendations for Brave Conduct in this year's Australian Bravery Decorations.
In September, 2009, the neighbours assisted Shirley by chasing off the dogs, which attacked her while she walked on Horton St.
Both men heard the woman scream and ran from their homes to help.
"We were lucky to be there," said Daniel.
Shirley suffered serious injuries and has undergone a number of operations since, but has her life, thanks to the brave actions of Fred and Daniel.
"I guess we saved her life - they could have killed her," said Fred.
"But I don't think about it like that, it's just something we had to do."
Daniel and Fred said they were shocked to learn of their awards.
"We weren't expecting it, but it's good to know someone thinks we've done a good thing," Fred said.
Daniel, who was 18 at the time, said his mum was "stoked".
