Aussie cyclists race to increase Commonwealth team chances

THE next generation of track stars will be keen to put their names up in lights when the Oceania Championships start in Adelaide today.

The event has attracted some of the best young riders from Australia and New Zealand, no doubt eyeing off a place in the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

One of the up-and-comers to watch will be Queensland's five-time junior world champion Taylah Jennings.

The 18-year-old will make her senior debut against the likes of Kaarle McCulloch who partnered superstar Anna Meares to a bronze medal in the team sprint in London.

In the men's events, team sprint world champion Matthew Glaetzer, 20, will look to excite his home crowd when he contests the keirin, men's sprint and teams sprint.

He will come up against the likes of young guns Alex Bird, Andrew Taylor and dual junior world champion Jacob Schmid.

The four-day event starts with the team pursuit, team sprint, time trials and scratch races tonight and wraps up on Saturday when the finals of women's sprint, men's keirin, women and men's omnium, women's 20km points race and the men's 40km madison will be decided.
