Animals sensed quake first, budgie shaken off perch

ARLENE Croome and her family of six woke up to the tremors in a state of fear yesterday morning.

"It was amazing and frightening at the same time," Mrs Croome said.

"My husband Greg and I have a fibro-wall bedroom so the noise woke us up instantly.

"Greg just casually said 'that's no storm, I think that's an earthquake'."

The Croome family lives on the south side of Miriam Vale, and even their pets got a big scare.

"Our budgie, Blue, lives next to the glass doors and with them all vibrating he actually fell off his perch," she said.

"Our dog wasn't (frightened) as much, but they were definitely unsettled. It's true when they say the animals always know first when something is happening."

Although the quake itself lasted only seconds, there was some damage.

"I haven't had a thorough check but I did notice some cracks in the concrete of our veranda," Mrs Croome said.

"My mother and grandmother in Monto have experienced tremors quite a bit so it's nothing new (for them), but the scary part for us was because you don't know.

"(You don't know) what's going on or how long it's going to last."
