Air quality should be a federal issue

AN ENVIRONMENTAL group is pushing for the control of air-monitoring and the related data to be removed from the State Government's responsibilities.

It follows Monday's public meeting held by law firm Environmental Justice Australia in Brisbane on air quality which had a particular focus on Central Queensland and the lack of government operated monitoring stations around coal mines.

Environmental Justice Australia researcher James Whelan is still waiting for the State Government to release air quality data from January 2015 and said communities would benefit from more "transparency".

Coal mining companies are required by law to have their own monitoring stations and self-report any exceedances.

But that data isn't necessarily shared with the wider public.

"Industry already monitors the air quality and could liase with an authority. We don't think that should be the State Government, rather the Federal Government," Dr Whelan said. Through examining the available data, Environmental

Justice Australia has found pollution from coal mining has tripled in the last ten years.
