Too young to know meaning of giving up, Abi fights on

AS Abi Wilkinson left the hospital grounds for the first time in seven months, she was achieving what doctors thought would be impossible.

The four-year-old girl continues to defy the odds after a horrific head-on collision on April 4 in Logan.

The accident left her a quadriplegic, but it was the beginning of an outpouring of love from the Gladstone community.

Almost $50,000 has been raised over seven months.

The first diagnosis in April was bleak, but the little girl has fought hard and long, and now, on the eve of her fourth birthday, it is time for a small celebration.

Her grandmother Kylie Bulley said the journey over the past seven months had been trying, but astounding.

"Abi is our hero," she said. "She is too young to know the meaning of giving up, so she hasn't.

"I'm just so proud of her. She is an amazing, inspirational little girl and we can all learn something from her."

Now operating her own set of wheels by moving her eyes, chin and head, it is a massive achievement for the girl who has escaped death and captured Gladstone hearts.

Now that she has gained mobility again, her mum Tanya Wilkinson said she believed she would soon be chasing her around.

"There is no stopping her," she said.

"Operating the chair herself has boosted her mood incredibly.

"She was chasing me around and when she caught me she laughed and laughed and laughed."

The family, which will be reunited in Brisbane this weekend, will head to South Bank together on Saturday for Abi's birthday.

Today, however, she will be celebrating with her nurses, who have all dressed up as fairies for a special birthday party.

"We all ventured out for our first family outing today," Mrs Wilkinson said.

"But we are going to take her to South Bank to dip her feet in the water. We are really looking forward to it."
