75 hours service for thief

WHEN dealing with Manasa Colin Vakararawa you better keep true to your word… or your liquor cabinet could be in danger.

With two other mates for company, Vakararawa broke into a woman's Telina home and stole a bottle of rum on April 28 after she failed to come through with a job promise.

Neighbours witnessed the man and boys entering the back door and called the police.

It took officers no time at all to catch up with the offenders who were only a few streets away.

Vakararawa's co-offenders were juveniles, but Gladstone Magistrates Court still heard on Tuesday how they both claimed to be followers rather than leaders in the crime - the same thing Vakararawa himself was saying.

Magistrate Russell Warfield said that was no excuse when facing a burglary charge.

Vakararawa was sentenced to 75 hours unpaid community service and has to go thirds in the price of a new bottle of rum.
