20,000 Queenslanders opposing net-free zones in the state

MORE than 20,000 people have signed a petition against the government's net free fishing ban in the central and northern regions of Queensland.

Queensland Seafood Industry Association director Kevin Reibel said the industry was humbled by the support of Queenslanders.

"The net free zone policy is and always has been the desire of a few selfish individuals hell bent on denying hard working people their right to fish commercially; Queenslanders have seen this for what it is and have strongly indicated they want access to local fish," Mr Reibel said.

The net-free zones have also been opposed by seafood shops in central Queensland, with several of them voluntarily take some items off the menu earlier this month to protest the proposed net-free fishing zones.

The Queensland Government will implement three net-free fishing zones, including a zone in the area from Yeppoon to Curtis Island, before the end of the year.

The decision was announced in mid-August.
